engine operation temperature

I had this problem with my 90 240. We bought it used, and the temp gage had always run in the low end of the range. I thought this was just normal for the car. Recently we had some pretty cold weather in NC and the needle barely got above the lowest white mark. Replaced the thermostat, and now the needle goes right to horizontal and stays there.

Does anybody know if there are any long-term effects of running too cool for years? The engine seems to run a bit better now, and it may be too early to tell, but mileage looks a little better too.
