Brake Dust shields- do they work, any downside to them V70-XC70 2001

any heat that can't get out means shorter pad and rotor life. in my mind, these things go through brakes fast enough. they do come vented and they are directional but from what i've seen on mbs and bmws, they aren't worth it. volvo is fussy enough to post a warning label on the 240 front spoilers that says, do not use this part without using vented front rotors. funny, i've never seen a set of dust shields on any volvo. just thinking, chuck.
