850 N/A - Check engine light 850

Was wondering what's the most frequent causes of the dreaded "Check Engine Light" might be. My area sorely lacks resposible and knowledgeable mechs and I have no access to ODBI (?) scan tool.

For the 94 850 is a tool even required? I've seen the box where it plugs in...

Any help immensly appreciated!
