Actually this is not a unique problem. If you do a search you'll see this over and over again. The latch does break and the only way to fix it is to pry the lid open enough that you can hack saw the metal brackets that hold the latch in. Put some duct tape around the door so you don't mess up the vinyl and hack away. Your dealer sells the metal replacement brackets as well as a new latch mechanism after you do this. Don't try to hold the door up with velcro after you cut the brackets like I did...they don't hold.
