I have many thoughts about this...first of all, there is NO FILTER for the 850's. Your local shop, if you're talking Jiffy Lube, etc., is not the place for your Volvo...they will surely screw things up. Yes, use synthetic...Mobil-1 makes a Synthetic ATF that does the job and you and your car will be happier for it. In regards to the flush itself, it's not hard to do...Check this out for the "flush Kit" that IPD sells as well as the pdf file in the middle of the page which will give you instructions: http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=1449&NodeID=4549&RootID=629 You could buy their kit or collect the needed parts to do this yourself. The alternative is to get a qualified shop that has the appropriate machine to do the flush for you...one that pushes all the tranny fluid out as new is going in...you'll need at least 12 qts, for the 10qt. capacity tranny, and probably more, either way. Here's a link to what the machine looks like and the explanation of the "shop" procedure:

MIJ
P.S. If you want to add a decent filter to your tranny line (not really necessary), may I recommend this:
