A story released over AP on Tuesday November 15 states that Ford has quietly reached a deal with CARB (California Air Resources Board) to extend the warranty on ETMs to 10 years or 200,000 miles. This is NOT a recall. The warranty would offer coverage for the ETM's cleaning, or replacement if it fails or begins to fail. A Volvo spokesman said that a dashboard warning lamp indicates the part is becoming defective.
The Volvo spokesman said that as many as 94 percent of ETMs will fail before their designed life span of 100,000 miles.
Affected vehicles include the 1999-2002 C70 coup and convertible models; 1999-2000 S70, V70 and V70SX models; 2000-2001 V70, V70XC and S60 models with turbocharged engines; 1999-2001 S80 models; and 2000-2002 V70 and S60 models with non turbocharged engines.
The story cited a Volvo company memo from a consultant suggested that Volvo could blame motorists' "driving patterns" in order to avoid taking responsibility.
Here's a company you can respect to do what's right, (for their pocketbook).
