This depends on the driving habbits. If most of the trips are short, less than 10 minutes, the engine does not get hot enough to burn all of the junk out of the exhaust. Take the car out and run it for an hour, down the highway at reasonable speed. Keep the rpms above 2500, use 3rd gear if you have to.
If your friend does drive hard, is the temp gauge at 3 o'clock? If not get a new thermostat asap.
