Are you comparing tires of the same speed rating? If the Pirellis were high performance tires (V-rated or higher), you shouldn't expect the same longevity as a lower rated tire.
I bought a used car (not a Volvo) with Generals on it and they were the worst tires I ever had, BUT they were very inexpensive tires which were not speed-rated at all. I don't blame them for being cheap (and I got a break on the price of the car). After my 2nd near-accident I put H-rated tires on the same car. Handling and especially traction in wet and snow were a world better.
Among H-rated tires I've had Michelin, BFG, Yokohama and Toyo. All have had similar longevity (not much more than 30K on a tire, though), but the Toyo handles inferiorly to the others.
