Gasp - I should be sure I know what I'm talking about first, next time.
My 98 V70 has pins (looking into the OBD2 connector in the car)
3,4,5,7,13,16.
Pin 7 is the ISO K line and this is the main data line, 5 gnd and 16 pwr. The others are likely used by Volvo for their VADIS diagnostics tool. Pin 15, the L line for the ISO standard is not necessary.
Bottom line - you need connectivity to pins 5,7,16 in the car.
I'm actually in the process of building a Scantool interface from components and hope to give it a try on the weekend.
