I tried using third party pads and went back to the Volvo pads to avoid the brake squeal. For firmer peddal, you can try flushing your brake fluid and possibly replacing the master brake cylinder. I did both on my S70 a few weeks ago and brakes are like new again. I found the master brake cylinder (rebuilt) at NAPA for $210 and you can get a mini-vac brake bleeder for about $30 at Harbor Freight. The flush alone may be all that you need.
