I agree the AMM is bad and that it goes into limp-mode when unplugged, but unplugging it also gives it a stable idle. If plugged back in and the idle is terrible or the car dies, that's a good sign that the sensor is bad. I had the exact same thing happen to my car last Dec. and replacing the sensor made everything work correctly again. Before that, the car bucked shook and wouldn't drive right...it also spewed foul exhaust while it was doing this.
