The T5 will give you plenty of power, and the new models are better than the first few years. At least you will be covered by Volvo for a few years. The T5 engine has been around for 10 years and is very reliable.
Just make sure you will be comfortable in the small car, it handles and rides completely different than the 960. Make sure you get roof rails in case you want to carry more than the little space behind the seat.
