Loose yoke on steering column.

The steering columns are meant to collapse when you get in a front end accident, but if you were hit from behind the driver could have exerted enough force to move the steering wheel.

If i understand you correctly is the whole steering wheel loose?

The steering wheels are also telescopic as well as tiltable. If you do not tighten the adjustable lever properly your steering wheel will suddenly seem like its dropping into the dash. Could this be the issue?
