I smashed the intercooler on mine on a highway alligator. It ran like crap. It also threw codes and turned on warning lights like I never saw before or since. No I think it would be very difficult to disable the turbo.
222HP isn't all that much by today's standards. It was warm-to-hot 11 years ago but that was 11 years ago. How about just adding a few hundred pounds of sand bags in the trunk "for traction"? (I think it works out to about 950 lb of sand to get the power-weight ratio of the 222HP Turbo the same as the 168HP NA car. About the same as 4 fat friends.)
If you really want to reduce performance, why not just trade it in on a 240?
