I replaced a whole mess of lights in the center console and radio of my 2000 v40. It took time but cost basically nothing...
I removed the climate control unit. In the back in deep recesses are the "sockets for the bulbs. Using a the eraser end of a pencil I was able to remove the dead bulb. It has a white base and bulb looks blue. The bulb is in fact just a regular bulb with a blue rubber cover on it - do not loose the cover (like I did). I removed the bulb from the socket by just unwinding the wires that hold it in place. I bought a replacement bulb from parts express (an electronics parts website). I then put the new bulb in the old socket and replaced it, unfortunately since I lost the blue cover the color of the new bulb doesn't match the old bulb.
It was a pretty easy job. The hard part was finding the right bulb. Unfortunately, I did this over a year ago and I don't remember the part #.
