Timing Belt Disaster - Not!!!!! V70-XC70

Hello All,

Earlier this week, I was pulling my hair out with misery concerning errors I had made in the replacement of my timing belt. You can read my post only a few below this one. I had it towed to Pete's yesterday and today he called me to tell me (and scold me as well) that it had locked up hydraulically. I don't know what the hell that means but with a total bill of $170, I was delighted.

A few things that he commented on: When he does a T-belt, he takes the harmonic balancer off, indicating "how did you get that belt on without kinking it"? He is apparently not a big fan of turning it sideways and squeezing it past the pulley. He was also not a fan of any of the aftermarket parts I purchased from FCP. When I defensively indicated that these are OEM components, he said that some may be made by the same company, but not to Volvo's exacting standards. For example, for years, he has been harping on me about not using Bosch plugs - that I should be using only Volvo plugs and hence part of the $170 was the installation of Volvo genuine plugs but don't get me wrong: I'm not complaining. This guy is so finicky about parts, I couldn't really get a word in edgewise. He did say "it was timed right".

He yelled at me for the Contitech t-belt. He scolded me for the Contitech serpentine belt. He never even heard of an INA idler. He laughed at the HEPU pump. I said "lots of fellows......on the internet....rave about the HEPU pumps. I recently installed on my 240". He said "I could tell by the casting, it was rougher than genuine Volvo. Where did you get these parts? Pete also commented that there was no need to replace the water pump, or idler cause these will give service until 210K. Only the t-belt, serp belt, and tensioner need to be replaced at 105K. His invoice also glaringly indicated that the tensioner is set wrong so the belt is too tight. He also didn't like my aftermarket thermostat (Wahler) cause the temperature gauge read slightly less than 9:00.

Anyway, hydraulically locked up. When I get the nerve up next week, I'll give him a call and ask exactly what the hell hydraulically locked up means.

In any event. One major piece of advice. Not hard either. Regardless of how you take your belt off, TIME IT FIRST AND DON"T MOVE ANY OF THE GEARS WHILE THE BELT IS OFF. Pete said there is a locking device, I guess for the cams. I really don't think you need it, just keep an eye on the timing marks, so you can't get fouled up.

One last thing. The camshaft marks, although small, are easy. You can use a little white out to accentuate them too. When they are lined up, the crankshaft has to be lined up too, except the crank gear/pulley marks are tough to see/identify. I just used a fixed point of plastic adjacent to the pulley and put a small mark on the edge of the pulley with a chisel. So in fact, although I screwed up on the way, I did time it correctly.

I hope this helps others. I was just out of my mind delighted that I hadn't killed the car. I can't tell you how depressed I was on Wednesday and how elated I was today. The ordeal is over. I should probably go back in there and adjust that tensioner, shouldn't I?

Best to all that offered help and support,

Marty
