trouble starting when warm V70-XC70 1999

I have a 99 v70 XC AWD. For months now, it has trouble starting after the engine has warmed up.

If I just crank it, the engine will eventually splutter to life (misses a beat or two after catching and then runs fine) in 5-10 seconds, perhaps longer.

If I just crank it for a second (bump the starter), wait a second, and THEN try to start it, it seems to start right up.

It seems to me this must be some sort of sensor problem, but I'm not sure where to start. Any suggestions would be helpful and thanks!
