OK, it was as I thought . . . the shift lock wasn't the only problem. When the "trigger" broke, the little metal rod fell out and allowed the shift rod to drop down and keep the lever from moving out of "Park."
I'm posting the following as a means of TEMPORARILY getting the car back on the road: Remove the shift knob (pull straight up), then withdraw the shift rod (black plastic, about 8 inches long, with a small hole through the top and metal tip on the bottom). One is now able to move the shift lever as needed, BUT there's no interlock to keep you from shifting directly from "Drive" to "Reverse." If you have to do this, be REALLY CAREFUL, drive the car as little as possible in this configuration, AND get a new shift knob assembly ASAP.
All the standard disclaimers apply (I am NOT responsible for anybody doing anything to their own car--or somebody else's car for that matter). ;^)
Best,
