You found your problem! I was on the Audi forum a couple of weeks ago when someone had the same problem, except it was AWD. The driveshaft of one of the wheels came loose and he lost all propulsion. The neat thing was that the speedometer would show speed when in gear and gas applied! The differential was just spinning :) He shoved the shaft back in and drove home, carefully.
