to keep white plastic flame trap or not? 850 1996

At the least, throw away the screen. All it does is get clogged.
The trap was put in during the carburator days when there was a possibility of a backfire going all the way to the crankcase. I don't think that ever happened. And with FI, it is close to impossible.
