Thanks Klaus! I was indeed talking about the white screen (which I have heard described as the flame trap-and not the oil trap which sits under the intake manifold), and it seems everyone (absent Boston Volvo) agrees that the flame trap should be tossed. Have a most wonderful weekend one and all :)
