Hi,
this sounds odd, are you sure the alternator is south? not just the brushes?
I drive two 850s from 94 having 270 and 220 kkm on clock. Last year I renewed the brushes of 270k without removing the alternator from the car, costs 25€.
Mine are Bosch 100A units in both 850s and seem to last forever.
If Bosch units, I would check the core reason once more, could save $550 easy.
