Todays pun: Klaus but no cigar.
I pulled the throttle body, against my co-workers advice. It was a bit dirty but definitely not 'the' problem. While I was cleaning the body my co-worker found a rip in the large rubber tube that feeds air to the throttle body. That tube is about 2.5" diameter, bends through 90 degrees and has a Tee section to feed the idle solenoid (at least I think that's what it's called). It appears that oil has pooled in the bottom of the tube, and with the engine heat it slowly degraded and then went soft and mushy. Finally it tore along 1" strip and therefore must be leaking as the turbo comes on. Not good.
This is $100 part, but the dealer can't get it until tomorrow.
I am pretty confident my problem will be solved when I install it.
Thanks for your help, it pointed me int he right direction. And now my throttle body id good for another 250,000 km.
