Hey, I kind of had the same thing happen to my 96' 850R the weld around the cat. came apart. So I just cut it off and welded a straight pipe in its place. I called the dealership and they wanted $1,600.00 dollars for a new exhaust system. To pricey for my blood. Before cutting the cat. off I got about 20-22 mpg and its more like 26-30 in and around town. 400+ to a tank of gas. So what I recommend and I am also doing is not fixing it. I am saving a ton of money at the pump. And a plus my car has a sweet deep sound now.
