I actually went through this procedure (mirror replacement) last weekend. In my case, I did need to remove the door panel as the mirror cables were taped to the door and I could not get to the connector otherwise. However, removing the panel was pretty straightforward and took all of 15 minutes. Instructions are available on Bay 13.
