I have seen kits with boots and new grease. I suppose they would work if the original CV joint had not picked up grit in the time between when the first boot cracked and the owner noticed the problem. 96k miles? If it is an original CV joint, you may want to replace it. Source of parts: OEM via a Volvo dealer?
