Get a second opinion regarding the breather box. If you use synthetic oil it probably isn't clogged. When the mechanic held his finger on the dipstick hole, did the idle smooth out???
Check the vacuum elbow that is under the intake manifold behind the PS pump, if it is cracked, that will cause all sorts of problems.

The dealer will not touch the ETM unless codes are present for it.

Your engine is the same for 2000-2003 if I remember correctly.
