I've done it in our shop but one needs to support the engine, remove drive shafts and much of the suspension, steering parts, lower subframe, remove trans on hoist with trans-jack. If I didn't work in a shop with all the needed tools, etc, I too would just pay to have it done rather than fool around trying it in my garage at home.
It might be possible with enough determination but it'd be alot more work than I'd want to do in my garage at home.
It's a 10 hour job via shop flat rate (time guide) manuals plus parts. I'd also only use OEM Volvo parts, not try something cheaper in price as it might not last long and you don't want it done twice.
