I paid $~360 for one at the dealer (440 less a 20% discount). I don't think there is a swtich that you are missing - i thought they were referring to potential shorts/electrical surges on contact, which is why i will disconnect the battery. I don't know anything about the brake positioning theory, though i can't imagine how to set it differently.
