If you used the Haynes manual, the plug location on the distributer is in error. #1 at 0930, #3 is at at 12:00, #5 is at 2:30, etc.

You put the timing marks at the correct locations, otherwise you would have bent valves. If the compression is flat, then just crank it until the oil light turns off.
