It's interesting that with all those changes, they haven't given the N/A engine any more power in the last 9 years. It still puts out 168hp even in the 2002 models. The 2.4 LPT engine was given more hp. in 2001, and the 2.3 HPT engine was bumped up in 1998 and 2001 (even more times if you count the "R" versions). There can't be many other cars out there (cerainly not in the same class) that have been using a base engine, with the same power output, for so long. It must be "just right" for a big chunk of the population. For those who wanted a little bit more, they just added another engine (the LPT in 97).
