What do you mean you feel "air in the system"? Is it spongy? Or is there simply long pedal travel?
Yes, if your pads and or rotors are worn, there will be more travel in the pedal. So yes, if they are worn, and replaced, the pedal travel will decrease before pad to rotor contact.
What is the "traditional way" you are referring to?
I only know of two ways to pressurize the brake system in order to flush out brake fluid, and that's either using the brake pedal, or an external pressure source such as pressurized air either in the form of an external compressor (pump), or pressure source (a spare tire).
