I have a 1998 V70XC and had the same problem. It wasn't the trans or the bevel gear, it was the henger bearing on the propeller shaft. I bought another one on Ebay for $800.00 and installed it myself. You could also just remove the whole shaft and go with FWD. You get better gas mileage and better response .
