And try the key in the hatchback, make sure it works. Mine eventually corroded so much that the key no longer turned. If never replaced, replace the hatch struts. The constant slamming is bad for the plastic bits in the lock.
Most Volvos do not have the struts replaced, ever.
On a test drive, before you put the key in the ignition: turn the ECC controls to auto fan/auto vent. That way, the system will go through its checks.
Correct about the ETM for 1999-2000. A Canadian outfit has a solution for around $400.
At 150K + miles, the PCV system needs attention. Remember to use only synthetic oils in these 5 cyl engines.
