You missed a lot. The engine must be running to pump fluid. Read the following:

The same system is used for all volvos.

PS fluid will not harm the system, it is hydraulic fluid. If you haven't bought ATF yet, try Mobile 1 ATF. A synthetic, it absorbs less water and lasts longer.
