Muffler packing material S60 2002

Over the weekend I noticed packing material (fiberglass of some sort?) coming from the tailpipe of my '02 S60 (turbo). Does that indicate the front or rear muffler is on its way out? There isn't any noticeable noise increase. I called the dealer for muffler quotes (apparently will have to take out a second mortgage to pay for them), and they said they've never heard of material coming from the tailpipe.
