The knock sensor will measure the vibration of the engine knocking. Knocking is when the fuel/air mixture is igniting too soon, while the piston is still traveling up the cylinder. Knocking is very destructive and can destroy your engine. When the knock sensor goes bad the computer will set the timming of the engine to a safe position , very retarded, and your engine will lose power but run fine.
