Yes, heat does play a role with the connections. I would unplug the rmp sensor and clean the contacts, grease them up with di-electric grease, and firmly plug it back in.

The tach should NEVER bounce around.

Also consider an Italian tune up. High rpms tend to clean up the flywheel as well as the valves and cylinders.
