You cannot use rubber because of the heat issue. The valve was stuck partly open at first start and seems to be moving now. It might still be slightly open at times, or moving slowly.

I am glad none of my Volvos had an EGR system.

I suspect that consistent use of 87 octane would be the major cause of crud.
