I just recently acquired the car and haven't bought a manual for it yet (which I typically do), but thank-you for your suggestion. I was thinking someone may already have done the job and had a procedure linked somewhere (as it is for the 850/V70 as you have).

I will buy a manual online, but I want to get it back on the road ASAP, and waiting for a manual (paper or CD) would take longer unless the job can ONLY be accomplished w/ a manual-in-hand.

Not sure why I would care if I damage the joints. Are you saying the damage would negate their use as cores if I buy remanufactured axles, or are you saying it would damage my transaxle? More info please...
