Re: Power/Geartronic Software Upgrade V70-XC70 2001

Hi John -

There seems to be plenty of news of trans problems at VCNA. When I complained about my clunky shifting, and "hunting" at low speeds (verified by the senior service tech who drove my car for sixty miles), my dealer quickly found this GT software update. The update is specifically designed to take care of problems just like mine that have apparently been reported widely. My dealer doesn't, however, know when the software will be available. He's told it should be this month, however. VCNA wouldn't offer this upgrade if there were no problems to fix.

The more miles I put on my car, the worse my trans has become. Which scares me into thinking I may have a mechanical problem as well as a software problem, since the software certainly shouldn't degrade with time.

In a nutshell: My trans is easily confused at low speed, often hunting for the right gear, and trying a couple of them before deciding on the right one. And, when in GT mode, third gear almost always gives the impression of shifting twice before settling into third for real. This all happens in everyday driving. When I floor it, everything seems much happier and well-sorted. For various reasons, I've decided that it just isn't practicle to use 100% throttle in every situation, just to make the transmission shift better :-)

Apparently this upgrade is available on Monday in Europe. I'd love to hear from anybody who knows about US availability...

- Darell
