Hi Margaret,

You probably need to clean the EGR valve and the flange where it mounts on the intake manifold. It clogs up with junk and will mess up your engine.
You can google some nice writeups about doing this PITA job.

You really want to do it so the engine doesn't decide to blow out a rear seal
which is a great job to avoid!.

People agree to throw away the flame trap, and clean out the egr lines.
