Another S40 question S40-V40 2001

The car seems to perform better at different times. Sometimes I will start it up and it seems very powerful, sprinting from a stop and other times it is almost sluggish and will only downshift if the pedal is floored. I suspect the electronic auto transmission, I think I would have preferred th eold sport/econ setting. Anybody else notice this?
