I notice the same problem with the 2001 S40 I test drove. I like having the option of sport or eco with my 2000 S40. I do think the 2000's are faster, but it's not all due to your tranny. It's your turbo, somedays are great for turbo's somedays it's not. It all has to do with the weather. also give your engine some time to break in, it takes somewhere around 10k+ before it's broken in. My beef with this new learning tranny is, if you drive conservative to save gas or whatever don't expect it to react like it was in sports mode, it's going to try to give you power by cutting off your A/C but not a great kickdown to save you gas and stuff. This could be why Volvo can say it get better gas mileage and stuff, but with the 2000's what are they going to say! Sport mode you get this gas mileage and in Eco you get this? Or maybe by getting rid of sport mode they think it more classy or something?
