I understand completely that fixed headrests are safer. I think what's going on here is that people have opinions that rest somewhere on the line of safe vs. practical. I view fixed headrests as a great idea. The ones in my Volvo seem to work fine for most of my passengers, but not my most frequent one. She'd much prefer adjustable headrests.

Much further past the adjustable headrest on the safety vs. practical spectrum is the M1A1 Abrahams (sp?) tank used by today's US Army. Driving and getting used to one of those would make the new Volvo V70 seem like an egg carton. (I've driven the V70 T5 but not the tank yet, so I'm just guessing.) However, the M1A1 is not practical for daily civilian use, at least not around Portland.

When all is said and done, she'll be driving the car with the adjustable headrests. I'll remain faithful to the fixed ones.

She, by the way, has been in no major accidents, whereas I've been in 4...hit a train engine (dark, no lights, crossing view obstructed, was a young kid), got run over in Acura Integra by a semi-trailor, and hit-head on once, and side-swiped once. No rear hits yet!
