It very well could be the ETM, which can be worn in one spot. The software upgrades move the rubbing arm to a new area on the ETM, which 'fixes' it for a while, but eventually the unit will have to be replaced.
Dealers are good for replacing the ETM, but your car is approaching the 10 year time limit, if not already there. 10 years from the date of original sale. And dealers will not replace it until there are error codes present.
