Tires 850 1996

I need new front tires for my 1996 850 Turbo and I so ordered 205/55/16's. I spoke to a friend who also has a similar Volvo however, and he said that the front tires should be smaller than the rear and that the right tire size is written inside the gas door. I looked and it says that the tire size is 205/50/16. I saw no problem with the 4 55's I have on it now and am somewhat confused. Which is the right size and what size should I put on my car? Thanks.
