I just took mine in for balljoint recall and some other warranty work. It also needs the 30K check. Dealer here in So. CA quoted me $390 for this check, so your dealer sounds a bit high. I have been trained as a mechanic, although some years ago, and do not do this for a living. However, I do enjoy working on my own cars. The check consists of changing oil/filter, cabin and engine air filters, and spark plugs. I purchased spark plugs and oil from Pep Boys, cabin, engine, oil filters from Volvo, plus an oil filter wrench. Total cost about$125. The rest of the 30 K check are various inspections. Also, the service light will be reset by the dealer only if they do the service, so I have to live with the light on until I figure out how to shut it off. They told me if I have any warranty claims against any systems that are included in the check and do not have a "certified" mechanic do this, I may have a problem with Volvo paying the warranty. They suggested keeping all receipts and writing down what was done. If you want to avoid this hassle, and save some money, try a local Volvo indpendent garage, they can probably cut the price at least 1/3. Just figure this as part of the price of ownership.
