You might want to put the rear on jack stands because sometimes it is easier if the rear axle is lifted just a bit to keep the spring from full extension, making the shock easier to remove/replace.
I found that using a wire brush on the bottom bolt to remove dirt works good to get a better purchase on the nut. Keep the PBBlaster handy.
While you are under there, check the rear axle boots.
