Yes it can be harder than the cam belt. Just not as messy if you goof. The car will not start without the module, as far as I know.

It is costly enough to get the codes read and make sure that the module is toast. The burning wire smell is not a good sign.

Does the car need to be programmed? I am a real dummy tonight and cannot answer that question. Hopefully not.
